Orkney Creative Hub

by Unknown - 19:33 on 21 February 2015

Today I took the ferry over from Rousay to Kirkwall to find out about the new proposal for the former Ortak buildings. Led by Orkney Crafts Association, Orkney Arts and Crafts and the not-for-profit art shop, For Arts Sake, the project has been set up as a Community Interest Company, ensuring its assets will stay within the community. The Orkney Creative Hub aims to provide a central site for education, development and enterprise opportunities for artists, designers and crafters of all ages and abilities, across many disciplines, from within and outwith Orkney.

We were given a guided tour of the buildings by Jan Judge, the project leader, who shared the detailed plans and vision for the project, which include a coffee shop and meeting area, a gallery and exhibition space, a retail shop, educational and individual craft workshops, storage areas and much more.

The proposals are very exciting and ambitious, with plenty of scope for development and flexibility of the creative arts within Orkney.

This project needs the support of the local community now to enable funding to be secured by April 2015. Visit the Orkney Creative Hub website at www.orkneycreativehub.co.uk for more information and to sign up to be a member to show your support and sponsor a donation towards the fundraising for the project.
